XR technology that goes off the bookshelf and tells history

meaning of history

History refers to the passage of time. In it, human society either prospered or collapsed. Looking at the records left by historians of the past, we can learn about the times and events of that time. So, the English word for history, history, is derived from the ancient Greek word historia (ἱστορία), which means 'to know' or 'to see'.

the word history objective factclass lyrical expression, subjective skillIt is defined as having three aspects of meaning, and the German historian Leopold von Ranke uncovering the past as it wasThe mission of this historian was emphasized on objective facts.

In contrast, British political scientist and historian Edward Hallett Ted Carr History can be written differently depending on the historian's point of view and social changes.said. It is not easy to define history like this, and it has changed depending on the individual's point of view.

But there is one thing that remains constant about history. Because history reflects the way humans have gone through, it is closely related to surrounding studies such as archeology and sociology. And as people's lives change according to each era, history will also change. Today, I would like to explain about XR contents and museums that explain history.

History left behind at the end of an era

Historical data left behind on the path mankind has walked can teach us who live in modern times. You can observe the ecology by looking at the remains of prehistoric times and dinosaurs, and you can also visit the royal tombs of the pharaohs to get a glimpse of the era. And remembering the worst disaster mankind has ever created, we can reflect.

Hold the World (2018)

Hold the World, which reproduces London's Natural History Museum in a virtual space, is an experiential museum that can be experienced in VR. You can experience the collections of the Natural History Museum from the comfort of your own home, and you can immerse yourself in the prehistoric age and the age of dinosaurs as explained by David Attenborough, a famous British zoologist and BBC documentary commentator.

It will be a good study to learn about the creatures that dominated the earth before the advent of mankind. Therefore, it is often used in educational institutions, and it is much more interesting to learn than pictures in textbooks.

Enter the Tomb: Virtual Reality Experience, 2019

The ancient Egyptian civilization developed along the Nile River and is one of the oldest civilizations with a long history. Pyramids were already ancient cultural relics for the Romans during the ancient Rome period between 753 B.C. and 476 A.D. And if you look at the buildings left by the ancient Romans and are considered ancient cultural relics to modern people, you can guess how long the history of Egypt is.

From November 2, 2019 to May 3, 2020, the exhibition Tutankhamun: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh was held at the Saatchi Gallery in London, UK. More than 150 authentic artifacts excavated from King Tutankhamen's tomb can be seen, and content to experience the pharaoh's tomb more realistically through VR was also provided.

Chernobyl VR Project (2016),

In the mid-to-late 20th century, there was a strange tension between the two superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union. There was no full-scale war, but war without gunshots continued using methods such as intelligence warfare, arms race, and proxy war. However, the Cold War did not last as long as expected. This is because an event that triggered the end of an era occurred, and this is the explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

Various contents have been created to explain and express the Chernobyl explosion accident. One of them, the Chernobyl VR project, is an experiential type of VR content designed to tour around the nuclear power plant in the form of a tour. As you can feel in the video, you can look around the empty city where people have left, and you can also virtually experience the area around the nuclear power plant where the accident occurred.

Artifact CHOrnobyl 34)

Several artists have also brought to light the tragedy of the Chernobyl accident through their new projects. The Artifact Project Konobyl 34 was exhibited in Ukraine from October 26, 2020 to May 5, 2021, drawing attention to the important truth that through XR technology combined with art, it is one of the greatest man-made disasters in human history.

history of war

War is violence or armed force between nations or political groups. Human history can be called the history of war, so many battles have taken place, and they are still ongoing. And the human beings in the war were both perpetrators and victims, a repetition of tragedies. We would like to introduce XR contents related to World War I and World War II.

War remains (2020)

It is a VR content that can be experienced at the National World War I Museum in Kansas City, USA. You can witness trench warfare and the emergence of tanks on the Western Front of World War I, one of the fiercest battlefields. Above all, the device that enhances the immersion of the audience is the battlefield stage made in real size and the memories of the terrible war shown by VR images.

Insurrection 1944 (2019)

It is AR content that allows you to experience Paris in August 1944, and you can experience it at the Musée de la Libération de Paris. Visitors wearing HoloLens headsets are given the role of journalists, visit resistance headquarters and learn about the history of the French Resistance during World War II.

Anne Frank House VR (2018)

War can thoroughly destroy an individual's life. Anne Frank House VR, a VR content based on Anne Frank, who is well known in Korea for her diary, is a content that clearly shows this. Travel back in time to World War II and experience the secret annex room where Anne Frank, her family, and four other Jews hid from Nazi persecution.

concluding remarks

In this way, human history includes all the ups and downs in it. One huge mistake can create another huge disaster, but sometimes we use it as a mirror to prepare for an unstable future. In the future, humanity will make another mistake. However, we must learn lessons from those mistakes, pass them on to future generations, and move in a more right direction. And cultural content will stand firmly on the axis of conveying these lessons.
